MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT STATISTICS

Motorcycle accidents are more severe and deadly compared to car accidents. The most recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicates that motorcyclists are 28x more likely to die in an accident compared to people in passenger vehicles. Motorcycle riders are also 4x more likely to be injured in a crash.

2020 Statistics from NHTSA indicate:

  • 5,579 motorcycle riders killed in motor vehicle accidents, representing 14% of all traffic fatalities.
  • The number of motorcyclists fatalities increased 11% compared to the previous year.
  • Over 80,000 motorcyclists were injured in accidents throughout the year.
  • Motorcyclists were more likely to be speeding or under the influence of alcohol compared to drivers of passenger vehicles.

Motorcyclists are less protected than people in a passenger vehicle. They are also more difficult to see even in clear weather conditions. Unfortunately, many of the motorcycle accidents causing serious injury or death are preventable.

FACTORS IN MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENTS

There may be several factors in a motorcycle accident, but facts show that some behavior may place motorcyclists at a greater risk for harm.

Factors that may be involved in motorcycle accidents:

Driving under the influence – 27% of the motorcyclists involved in fatal crashes had a Blood Alcohol Concentration of .08% or higher, compared to 23% of motorists driving passenger cars.

Helmet use – 57% of motorcyclists killed in states that do not have universal helmet laws were not wearing a helmet at the time of the fatal crash.

Driving without a license – 36% of motorcycle riders involved in fatal crashes did not have a valid motorcycle license.

Speeding – 34% of motorcyclists involved in fatal crashes were speeding compared to 22% of drivers in passenger vehicles.

It is essential to note that it is not your responsibility to determine what caused the accident. There may be one or more factors involved in the accident including fault on more than one party. The most important thing you can do if you are injured in a motorcycle accident is to discuss your case with an experienced attorney.
